Will someone please describe how the plates work on an owls face/skeletal structure because the anatomy refs I have show everything but those and it would be helpful to understand their facial construction.

When you look at a barn owl's skeleton it shows the skull and beak but not where the beak actually shows because the facial structure isn't tight around the skull itself- I was under the impression that they had "plates" of some kind toward the front of the face????? not sure...

Owls have a crazy amount of feathering on their faces that helps create the flat, disc-like shape which in turn helps with their hearing. To look at a Barn Owl's skull [ [link] ], it looks similar to a hawk's skull. The feathering is what makes the difference in shape. Whereas the Red-tail has very short contour feathers on its face, the owl's facial feathers are much longer.
